World Mental Health Day: 4 Simple Ways You Can Take Care of Your Mental Health at Work

mentalhealth

This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day is ‘Mental Health at Work’, so it is important to highlight the seriousness of ensuring the workplace is a safe and healthy place to be. A supportive work environment encourages purpose and stability, contributing to good mental health.

Here are some ways you can take care of your own mental health:

1. Talk About Things That Impact Your Mental Health

  • Talking about how you’re feeling can feel difficult, however you may feel better after getting it off your chest. If you don’t feel comfortable speaking to someone at home or work; here are some charities who are there for anyone who needs to talk:

0300 102 1234 : Mind Support Line

116 123 : Samaritans (24 hours)

0800 689 5652 : National Suicide Prevention Helpline UK

85258 (Text SHOUT, for 24/7 text support)

2. Physical Health Supports Mental Health

  • Regular movement, even if it’s a 20-minute walk, can help you to clear your mind, sleep better and improve your concentration
  • It can be hard to fit in exercise around work commitments, so try and go for a short walk on your lunch break or cycle to work if you can
  • Ensure you are eating a balanced diet and your five a day as this can contribute to how you feel. It can be difficult to keep up with regular healthy eating at work, so try and create a routine to ensure you are eating or buying healthy meals and drinking at least two litres of water per day

3. Sensible Alcohol Intake

  • For the most part, drinking at work is unacceptable, however it is widely recognised that people may drink more after a hard or stressful time at work
  • Be mindful of how much you are drinking, it is recommended to drink no more than 14 units per week
  • You could try a low or no alcohol alternative

4. Connect With Others and Support Their Mental Health Too

  • Creating and maintaining good relationships with people is really important for your wellbeing. They can help you to build a sense of belonging and self-worth and provide emotional support and allow you to support others
  • It is really important to maintain relationships with friends and family even when work is intense, so ensure that you have a work-life balance and take time to see people outside of work commitments
